About Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia in the UK. The first sign is usually minor memory problems.

Our assessment looks at whether dementia is present and what may be causing it, including Alzheimer's disease.

1 in 14

An estimated 1 in 14 people over 65 have Alzheimer's disease or another type of dementia, rising to 1 in 6 over 80.

1 in 13

Around 1 in 13 people with Alzheimer's disease are under 65. This is called early-onset or young-onset Alzheimer's disease.

Figures from the NHS, Alzheimer's disease, last reviewed 4th July 2024.

Early signs of Alzheimer's disease

The NHS lists these among the early symptoms. People often contact us because they, or someone close to them, have noticed changes like these.

  • Forgetting recent conversations or events
  • Misplacing items
  • Forgetting the names of places and objects
  • Having trouble thinking of the right word
  • Asking the same questions again and again
  • Poor judgement or finding it harder to make decisions
  • Becoming less flexible and more hesitant to try new things
  • Anxiety, agitation or periods of confusion

Not always dementia. Memory problems can also be caused by depression, stress, medicines or other health problems. An assessment helps find out what is causing them.

How Alzheimer's disease is diagnosed

There is no simple and reliable test for Alzheimer's disease. A specialist assesses memory and thinking, arranges blood tests to rule out other causes and may recommend a brain scan. Our assessment brings these together.

  1. Cognitive examinationA mental health nurse examines attention, orientation, memory and language, as well as visual perception and visuospatial skills.
  2. Blood testA sample taken at your chosen address is checked for other conditions that can affect memory and thinking.
  3. Brain scanAn MRI or CT scan at one of over 200 scan centres across the UK shows the structure of the brain, including any areas of shrinkage.
  4. 24-hour heart rhythm monitorSent to your home, it gives a picture of your heart health and of risk factors that can affect the brain.
  5. Consultant appointment and diagnosisA consultant old age psychiatrist reviews your results with you, confirms your diagnosis and advises on next steps.

From booking to diagnosis typically takes 20 working days.

Questions about an Alzheimer's assessment

Can I get a private Alzheimer's test?

Yes. There is no single test for Alzheimer's disease, so our assessment brings together a cognitive examination, a blood test, a brain scan and a 24-hour heart rhythm monitor. A consultant old age psychiatrist then confirms the diagnosis.

How much does a private Alzheimer's assessment cost?

The full assessment costs £2,999.00, payable in two equal instalments. With a face-to-face nurse appointment at our London Waterloo clinic it costs £3,499.00, or £3,999.00 with face-to-face nurse and consultant appointments.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly with us, for yourself or for someone close to you. With your consent, we send your report to your GP.

How long does it take to get a diagnosis?

Your first appointment is available the same week you contact us, and from booking to diagnosis typically takes 20 working days.

Can someone under 65 have Alzheimer's disease?

Yes. The NHS says around 1 in 13 people with Alzheimer's disease are under 65. This is called early-onset or young-onset Alzheimer's disease.

Is Alzheimer's disease inherited?

Most dementia is not inherited. Our article explains how genes affect risk and when a genetic test can help.

Is dementia hereditary?
Do you provide Alzheimer's care?

No. We assess, diagnose, treat and advise, but we do not provide home care or residential care. The organisations on our dementia support page can help with care and day-to-day support.
