What is a memory clinic?

A memory clinic assesses problems with memory and thinking, finds out what is causing them and diagnoses dementia where it is present.

On the NHS, your GP refers you to a specialist, who may be an old age psychiatrist, a geriatrician or a neurologist. The specialist may work in a memory clinic with other professionals who are experts in dementia.

In our memory clinic, a mental health nurse carries out your cognitive examination and a consultant old age psychiatrist confirms your diagnosis.

Who works in a memory clinic

Alzheimer's Society says a memory clinic team may include:

  • Psychiatrists
  • Geriatricians
  • Neurologists
  • Mental health nurses
  • Psychologists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Social workers
  • Dementia advisers

What happens at our memory clinic

There is no single test for dementia, so we bring several together.

  1. Cognitive examinationA mental health nurse examines attention, orientation, memory and language, as well as visual perception and visuospatial skills.
  2. Blood testA sample taken at your chosen address is checked for other conditions that can affect memory and thinking.
  3. Brain scanAn MRI or CT scan at one of over 200 scan centres across the UK shows the structure of the brain, including any areas of shrinkage.
  4. 24-hour heart rhythm monitorSent to your home, it gives a picture of your heart health and of risk factors that can affect the brain.
  5. Consultant appointment and diagnosisA consultant old age psychiatrist reviews your results with you, confirms your diagnosis and advises on next steps.

From booking to diagnosis typically takes 20 working days.

What happens at each appointment

Private and NHS memory clinics

Both lead to a diagnosis from a specialist. The main differences are how you are referred and how long you wait.

An NHS memory clinic

Free to use, usually through a GP referral. Waiting times vary by area. The median wait from referral to diagnosis at memory assessment services in England, Wales and Jersey was 137 days in 2025, according to the National Audit of Dementia.

Our private memory clinic

You book directly, with no GP referral, and your first appointment is available the same week. From booking to diagnosis typically takes 20 working days. With your consent, your report goes to your GP, so your care can continue through the NHS or privately.

How private assessment works alongside the NHS

Our memory clinic team

Your cognitive examination is with a mental health nurse. Every diagnosis is confirmed by a consultant old age psychiatrist on the General Medical Council (GMC) specialist register.

Memory clinic questions

If your question is not here, call us and we will talk it through.

Is there a private memory clinic near me?

Our memory clinic is built around where you live. Most appointments are by video at home, your blood sample is taken at your chosen address and brain scans take place at one of over 200 centres across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Face-to-face appointments are available at our London Waterloo clinic and in larger towns and cities.

Do I need a GP referral for a private memory clinic?

No. You can book directly with us, for yourself or for someone close to you. With your consent, we send your report to your GP once your assessment is complete.

What happens at a memory clinic appointment?

A mental health nurse carries out a cognitive examination, which looks at memory, attention, language and other thinking skills. You then have a blood test, a brain scan and a 24-hour heart rhythm monitor. Once the results are back, a consultant old age psychiatrist confirms your diagnosis and advises on next steps.

Can someone come with me?

Yes. It often helps to have someone who knows you well with you. They can describe any changes they have noticed and help you remember what was said. They can sit with you during a video appointment or come with you to the clinic.

Do you offer home visits?

Most of the assessment already happens at home. Your nurse and consultant appointments are by video, your blood sample is taken at your chosen address and the heart rhythm monitor is sent to your home. In some areas we can also offer home visits, priced on request. If you need to be seen face-to-face, call us to talk through the options.

Do you provide memory care?

No. We assess, diagnose, treat and advise, but we do not provide home care or residential care. The organisations on our dementia support page can help with care and day-to-day support.
